This is an exciting time for us here at Imagination. Over the past few months there have been a series of announcements from our silicon and OEM partners who have released multiple computing platforms incorporating our PowerVR Series5 and Series5XT graphics solutions. Some of the most recent products we’ve seen have been coming out of Asia, with China and Taiwan in particular seeing an insurgence. This is the case of Ingenic Semiconductor, a Chinese company founded in 2005 and based in Beijing. At CES 2013, MIPS and Ingenic are showcasing the JZ4780 that promises to deliver a new performance point for power-efficient and affordable devices.
The JZ4780 is part of Ingenic’s xBurst lineup of products, which are designed to redefine the performance and power consumption criteria for a modern embedded SoC. These platforms have been used by smartphone and tablet manufactures from India and China to create innovative products at attractive prices. As a quick fun fact, Ingenic were the first to release an Android 4.0 tablet.
Ingenic’s JZ4780 promises high performance at low power
The affordable dual-core JZ4780 SoC offers high performance and advanced graphics, along with ultra-low power consumption. The new MIPS-Based SoC from Ingenic leverages Imagination’s advanced graphics IP to offer an engaging experience on tablets and other consumer devices. The high level of integration and ultra-low power consumption of this new SoC allows Ingenic to become a true contender in the mobile arena.
This announcement was also accompanied by a reference design for a low-cost 10” Android-based tablet. This demo product will enable fast time to market for OEM, bringing even more consumers one step closer to owning a Google device that integrates our PowerVR graphics solutions.
Imagination is a key player in the fast-paced Asian market

PowerVR Series5 GPUs going strong
The JZ4780 proves yet again that the PowerVR SGX540 ticking inside, and Series5/Series5XT graphics family in general, have huge potential, especially for silicon companies that want to enter the fast Asian market where aggressive pricing usually takes precedence. By going to lower process nodes, our partners are able to clock the GPU higher thus getting more out of our PowerVR graphics IP while still maintaining a leading edge in low power consumption, as we’ve seen in a number of tests lately.
Our graphics IP offers industry leading performance and is solution focused. We can offer a GPU that is able to interact with any CPU architecture – RISC or CISC, virtually giving our customers a SoC-ready solution that is easy to integrate and designed for mobile and embedded platforms where low power is of the essence. PowerVR SGX has been the first OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0 and
OpenVG 1.1 Compliant Solution, offering complete graphics acceleration with reduced CPU loading. It also offers OpenCL and Renderscript/Filterscript support, which will become increasingly important in the near future, as applications designed to take advantage of GPU compute will be able to run not just on high-end Series6-based platforms but also on the hundreds of millions of budget tablets, smartphones and other embedded devices.
