Realtek introduces the new 4K-capable RTD2995 with PowerVR Series5XT graphics

Realtek’s RTD2995 smart TV SoC made quite the entrance at COMPUTEX 2013 in Taiwan by winning the coveted Best Choice Golden Award for the ‘Digital Entertainment’ category. One of the world’s leading network and multimedia IC providers, Realtek has designed the RTD2995 to be a complete, cost-effective and future-proof solution that solves the issue of large pixels found in super-sized displays that prevented clear images.

This multimedia chipset is capable of  processing/displaying 4K content and running smart operating systems like Android OS, offering consumers all the advantages of an Android-based device: fast web browsing using Chrome, video streaming on YouTube and easy access to their favourite apps, all seamlessly integrated with live TV.

The industry-leading PowerVR SGX GPU family is capable of supporting stereoscopic 3D graphics, for a console-like experience well-suited to high-resolution FPS and racing games. When you add fast 4K video decoding and 1080p encoding to the mix, together with support for 3D shutter glass and PR panel, RTD2995 is sure to deliver a realistic, immersive 3D experience on an affordable platform.

Hardware features aside, Realtek has added gesture control and object recognition support, offering new, more intuitive ways to control the UI. Our experience in delivering full support for OpenCL and Renderscript/Filterscript across various mobile and embedded platforms allows our partners to implement some of this functionality using GPU compute.

Moreover, we are delighted to see Realtek are deploying Android OS on their RTD2995 platform, accelerating native 4K content development for the popular operating system from Google. The advantage of Android OS is that smartphone and tablet applications designed using the NDK can run on all Android-based smart TV SoCs with little to any modifications. It allows users to download and play more games on bigger screens, at Full or Ultra HD resolutions.

PowerVR GPUs: the ideal solution for embedded graphics

Realtek is one of our many lead licensees for PowerVR GPUs in smart TV platforms, using a multicore Series5XT to drive Ultra HD (4K) displays. Thanks to our commitment to keep improving driver and compiler performance across all our GPUs, developers can get the most out of every PowerVR graphics core while staying in the power envelope of a mobile and embedded device. This continued process allows our partners to stay ahead of the competition and keep updating to new versions of all operating systems at an accelerated pace.

PowerVR Series5XT GPUs were designed to deliver the required fillrate for 1080p and 4K high-resolution displays; even more impressive, the new ‘Rogue’ architecture can comfortably scale up to 8K resolutions. This enables app developers to create fluid, high resolution user interfaces, develop high quality 3D games or GPU accelerated web browsers, and enhance social media content through image and video pre- and post-processing.

With design wins such as LG, MediaTek, MStar and now Realtek, PowerVR has become the most widely deployed graphics core in the smart TV space. By combining our GPU technology with the market leading MIPS CPUs, our partners can deliver console-like processing performance on a dedicated smart TV platform at very attractive price points.

Smart TV SoC

Looking forward in the digital TV space, we are increasingly seeing devices adding more and more functionality, moving towards the ‘always on’ connected user experience with advanced functionality such as WiFi streaming or Bluetooth v4. Moving this functionality on-chip by integrating one of our Ensigma radio processors brings numerous advantages, including reducing area size, accelerating time to market and enabling connectivity as well as analogue and digital TV reception standards on a single device.
