Introducing MediaTek’s MT6589, MT6577, MT6573 and other innovative solutions for smartphones, tablets and digital TVs

MediaTek is one of Imagination’s main partners in the APAC region when it comes to home entertainment and mobile communication solutions. The company delivers innovative, feature-rich yet cost-effective platforms to meet consumers’ needs. MediaTek has been a key player in the ‘smart’ revolution brought by smartphones, tablets and connected TVs, opening up new opportunities in emerging markets, growing and strengthening its presence around the world and even attempting to acquire other IC design houses in the process.

Home Entertainment solutions for digital TVs

MediaTek recently made CES headlines when it announced the extension of its licensing partnership with Imagination for the PowerVR Series5XT graphics processor family. The Taiwanese company has been integrating PowerVR GPUs in most of their SoC solutions designed for the highly competitive digital TV market, especially smart TVs. One of MediaTek’s customers is the LG Group who will use their SoCs in their mid- and entry-level devices. This is very important news for Imagination, since this essentially means all digital TVs from LG will have PowerVR GPUs ticking inside, as the H13 platform from LG Electronics with PowerVR Series6 graphics targets their high-end DTV range.

Mobile Communications platforms for smartphones and tablets

The MT6589 targets the mid- to high-end smartphone and tablets market

The MT6589 is a multimedia powerhouse, integrating a PowerVR Series5XT GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) from Imagination, delivered in a 28nm process technology. As MediaTek is one of the leaders in dual-SIM technology, the MT6589 is also the world’s first HSPA+ smartphone platform supporting dual-SIM, dual-active functionality.

MediaTek MT6589The PowerVR GPU is powerful enough to support multiple 3D displays, including real-time 2D to 3D conversion, and up to 1080p Full HD resolutions. The Huawei Ascend G520 and Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD are among the first smartphones to use the MediaTek MT6589 chip, joining over 60 exiting models in design or about to be launched.

For example, Gizchina have identified the 15 most popular 1080p display smartphones in China right now. A clear majority is PowerVR SGX544MP-based, with more upcoming announcements in the near future.

It’s not just Chinese OEMs who have been using the MediaTek MT6589 SoC; other top tier smartphone and tablet manufacturers are looking at using these chipsets in their upcoming devices too.

The MT6577 pushes Android 4.0 smartphones under $200 contract-free

The MT6577 is a recent design for entry-level smartphones. It includes a PowerVR SGX Series5 GPU for handling graphics which is fast enough to run Google’s Android OS comfortably, even at a 720p resolution. The MT6577 has been quickly adopted by leading global customers who are increasingly targeting the very affordable phones market.

MediaTek launched the MT6573 platform to address the accelerating demand for smartphones with features that can delight users. MT6573 can also deliver attractive pricing points for devices that meet the needs of operators in developed markets and consumers in emerging markets.  It can be found in phones like the Lenovo A60 and A65, the Motorola Motoluxe XT389, the Alcatel OT-985 or the Icemobile Galaxy Prime.

The MT6575 is a dual-SIM smartphone platform for the mainstream market

The MT6575 is a single CPU core solution with a PowerVR Series5 GPU on board and an integrated HSPA modem. The powerful graphics core from Imagination offers Google’s Android 4.0 running smoothly on a qHD screen and can drive 3D displays. The multimedia-oriented SoC also supports 720p video playback and recording as well as an 8 MP sensor and has been described as one of the key factors in enabling the “$50-100 smartphone” phenomenon, addressing the growing market for mid and entry‐level smartphones.

Neil Mawston, Executive Director, Global Wireless Practice, at Strategy Analytics has forecast that mid- and entry- mobile segment will almost triple in size from 191 million shipments in 2012 to 551 million by 2016, with approximately 75% of those devices to ship to emerging markets. Imagination continue to drive and contribute to this fast-moving market, by creating close strategic relationships with companies like MediaTek that are able to constantly deliver highly-integrated solutions – a perfect match for consumers who want the same performance as flagship devices but at a lower cost.

Our PowerVR GPUs are the perfect choice for current and future licensees who are looking to provide real-life performance as well as differentiate their solutions through scalable processing options and a wide range of supported APIs. Ultimately, we are all eager to see these SoCs make their way into exciting OEM products that will end up in the hands of hundreds of millions of consumers and, in the case of a lucky few, on the wall inside our demo room.

good one , but SGX GPU 6 had been presented and android 4.0 is quite old now , what s new thing ?

    Hi,

While Series6 has been announced and is starting to appear in consumer products, we also believe Series5XT will continue to lead the market for mass market, high performance computing platforms from companies like MediaTek.

The new thing is the number of design wins the MediaTek MT6589 SoC has had (over 60 as of March 2013), including the largest number of announced 1080p and 720p screen smartphones.

    Regards,
    Alex.

MediaTek says that MT6589 has Dual SIM Dual Active capability, but somehow all the phones that got to the market are Dual STBY and not Dual Active. I wonder why?

    Hi,

Imagination provides the PowerVR GPUs inside all these platforms. The choice of supporting either DSS or DSA connectivity is probably made by most OEMs according to their own manufacturing standards.

    Alex.

When mediatek is going to upgrade to android 4.3,why u are providing opengles3 driver for mt6589.

    Hi,

Updating to the latest version of the Android operating system is not simply down to the IP provider or chipset vendor or OEM/ODM company.

All suppliers in the manufacturing chain have to get involved, therefore it sometimes takes time between OS updates. Regarding OpenGL ES 3.0 support, we provide a fully conformant implementation with PowerVR Series6 (MediaTek MT8135 is the platform for that) while all other Series5XT-based platforms can get certain OpenGL ES 2.0 extensions which provide some OpenGL ES 3.0 functionality.

Again, choosing to update to the latest driver is down to each company; we provide them with a DDK and support whenever they choose to update.

    Regards,
    Alex.
