LG CINEMA 3D smart TVs with PowerVR Series6 graphics start shipping
After unveiling the new LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV line-up at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, the Korea-based company has now started to ship their range of Ultra and Full HD resolution smart TVs in various markets, including Western Europe, Korea and North America, with more soon to follow.
LG smart TVs deliver ultra-high performance with low power consumption, featuring a high resolution onscreen interface which provides easy access to what’s trending on news sites, up-to-the-minute weather information and quick customization according to each user’s needs and preferences.
PowerVR Series6 GPUs enable the next step in smart TV evolution
The next step in the smart TV evolution is to add features inspired by handheld markets for UI, apps and more. TVs are generally the largest physical displays within the consumer electronics segment, and are among the few devices users spend the most time with. If the user interface plus speed and responsiveness of the TV are not perfect, users will quickly identify this, and so it is essential to deliver the best in graphics.
Imagination is well-known as the best graphics technology for the mobile and embedded market, so it’s no surprise that LG, a leader in TV and founder of the Smart TV Alliance, has now adopted PowerVR graphics across its newest range.
By integrating PowerVR GPUs inside their smart TV SoCs, silicon vendors deliver manufacturers a path to innovation and differentiation through a value proposition built on a wide ecosystem of applications backed up by our high performance TBDR graphics architecture.
PowerVR Series6 GPUs are designed to drive high fillrates for 4K UIs and beyond, thanks to a careful architectural balancing of processing resources. Furthermore, because PowerVR Series6 GPUs were designed for a wide range of graphics and compute APIs, smart TVs can expand their functionality beyond traditional use cases and have the ability of running apps with better image quality, support voice and gesture recognition, enable advanced UI effects, and many more.
All high-end models detailed below use LG’s own H13 SoC with a two-cluster PowerVR Series6 graphics core, while more affordable models include SoCs with PowerVR Series5XT GPUs.
Introducing the 2013 LG CINEMA 3D smart TV range with Full and Ultra HD resolutions
LA9700 3D Ultra HD TVs
According to LG, the LA9700 Ultra HD models will be initially shipping in 65” and 55” versions. As most manufactures move to Full and Ultra HD resolutions, it allows UI and app developers to bring a cinematic feel to the viewing experience, creating a more immersive environment for consumers.

LG are committed to ensure consumers will start enjoying more 4K content as soon as possible by signing cooperation agreements with a number of Korean broadcasters and content makers to drive the production of native 4K media and deliver a whole new level of picture quality.
LA9600 3D Full HD LED TVs
These flagship models feature Nano Full LED backlighting. All LG LA9600 TVs also include LG’s Micro Pixel Control and Advanced Cinema Screen technology, an IPS panel with an MCI (Motion Clarity Index) of 1000, a passive 3D display, NFC support, and built-in Wi-Fi.
LA8600 3D Full HD LED TVs
The LG LA8600 series switches to Edge Lit LED lighting for a slightly lower MCI refresh rate of 800. Feature-wise, all models in this series retain the same specifications as the models in the LA9600 series.
LA7900 3D Full HD LED TVs
The LG LA7900 models do not have the Advanced Screen Cinema feature and there is no built-in Skype camera, but incorporate LG’s dual-core H13 processor and PowerVR Series6 graphics.
Applications of PowerVR GPUs in digital TV
PowerVR Series5XT and Series6 graphics cores support a wide range of graphics and compute APIs that enable image processing and enhanced video decoding tasks to be handled by the GPU, therefore offloading the main CPU, lowering power consumption and increasing overall system performance. With PowerVR, developers can use OpenCL, Renderscript or Filterscript to provide TV enhancement functions such as:
- transforming video for visually impaired users (for example, converting the images into high contrast colours)
- advanced gaming – with PowerVR Series6 graphics on-board, games from tablets, smartphones, even games consoles, can be easily ported
- process videos and photos as textures (simple photo editing, user-defined custom UIs, picture-in-picture effects etc.)
- gesture recognition and control input processing (voice control) – a great example of how GPUs can be utilised for computation
- face recognition to identify users for social media ,video conferencing, or personalisation and recommendation of the EPG; you can even filter out content unsuitable for children
- post-processing algorithms for user-generated content (for example, image and video stabilization)
Future smart TV interfaces will increasingly combine APIs like OpenGL ES and OpenCL with powerful hardware like PowerVR Series6 and Series5XT GPUs to deliver photorealistic effects in gaming, improve the user navigation process and provide superior UI quality. Developers can use OpenCL on PowerVR GPUs to accelerate effects that enhance the user experience further through radiosity (improved shadows and diffused light), Reyes rendering (photorealism), cloth animations, soft body dynamics (real world object movement), Perlin noise (controlled randomness), and particle physics (advanced animation).
LG has already demonstrated some of these features in developing Voice Mate, the enhanced version of the company’s voice control technology. Using Voice Mate, LG TVs are capable of recognizing the natural flow of language and provide a unified search option that simultaneously filters results from VoD services, search engines, external devices and more.
PowerVR GPUs also deliver much more than a baseline OpenGL ES implementation, supporting advanced algorithms like displacement and light mapping, anisotropic lighting (atmospherics), deformation effects (peeling off UI pages), frame bending, opacity and translucency (‘see behind’ and ‘see through’ effects) and Fresnel reflections (liquid surfaces).
