Ensigma Series4 Radio Processing Units for all your communication needs

// January 10th, 2013 // Communications, Ensigma Communications

A few months ago, we announced that our Ensigma Series3 Radio Processing Units had achieved Wi-Fi Direct certification, making them an ideal all-round connectivity solution for 802.11 a/b/g/n with MIMO smart antenna technology and Bluetooth v3.0 compatible solutions. The Embedded Technology conference and exhibition in Yokohama, Japan was the ground for the release of Imagination’s new family of RPUs, Ensigma Series4 which was accompanied by a range of demonstrations given by some of our most important partners, including Toumaz/Frontier Silicon and SiS.

A perfect example of how Ensigma RPUs can enable customers to deliver intelligent TV solutions is the SiS330 HDTV platform which offers multiple TV demodulators supporting worldwide major TV broadcasting standards. By integrating our Ensigma technologies, the SiS330 SoC is one of the industry’s few single chip solutions to support universal TV broadcasting standards, including ATSC/DVB-T/DVB-C/ISDB-T/CTTB and J.83B demodulators therefore providing a robust, single solution for the North and South American, European, Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese markets.

With Ensigma Series4 RPUs, Imagination builds on the success of the Series3 family, by implementing all connectivity and broadcast reception requirements of tomorrow’s complex SoCs.  We’ve designed this technology to include over 30 different standards making it the world’s most comprehensive baseband solution for advanced chipsets. Ensigma Series4 also offers a comprehensive roadmap with scalable configurations of one to four multiprocessor units which offer different performance points for system engineers while also minimizing bandwidth and keeping power consumption at its lowest.

Ensigma Series4XT offers support for IEEE 802.11ac which is an 802.11 wireless networking standard that is currently still under development. The new version promises to improve over the current 802.11n standard by providing high-throughput wireless local area networks on the 5 GHz band. Devices with the 802.11ac specification will to become common by 2015 with an estimated one billion spread around the world. Future Ensigma RPUs will implement this innovative specification which enable multi-station WLAN throughput of at least 1 gigabit per second and a maximum single link throughput of at least 500 megabits per second (500 Mbit/s). This is done by extending the RF bandwidth (up to 160 MHz), including more MIMO spatial streams (up to 8) and multi-user MIMO, and implementing high-density modulation (up to 256 QAM).

Thanks to its modular architecture, Ensigma Series4 offers our customers a wide range of choices from MIMO multi-stream cores with dynamic support for mixed simultaneous standards to single-stream configurations to replace multiple hardwired cores or expensive SDR (software-defined radio) solutions. This release should also tackle uncertainty in the market by improving a ‘future proof’ design which would gain the right momentum to disrupt the broadcasting industry.

Ensigma Series4 supports all key standards for TV including DVB-T2, DVB-T, ISDB-T, SBTVD, ATSC, GB20600-2006 (CTTB), DVB-S2,DVB-S,ISDB-S, DVB-C2, DVB-C, J.83B, ISDB-C; Analogue TV including DVB-H, T-DMB, 1-Seg ISDB-T. Connectivity is also covered by including 802.11abgn, MIMO, 802.11n, MIMO 802.11ac, (Complete, Fully Embedded, or Thin MAC with simultaneous Bluetooth). Furthermore, Ensigma integrates modules to enable radio standards including DAB/DAB+, HD Radio, 3-seg ISDB-T, ISDB-Tmm, DRM, FM, AM as more and more digital radio listeners switch on to digital radio across UK and Europe.

Ensigma Series4 RPU world TV standards

All of the above make Ensigma Series4 the perfect solution for markets like Digital TV and Set-top boxes, Digital Radio (Consumer and Automotive), Tablets / Smart Phones, Connected consumer products, and the Internet of Things.
